Let me start by saying that I love newborn sessions. I get to hold and cuddle and love on your squishy baby and I love babies. I like to do newborn sessions the first week after they are born. I like to get them before things like baby acne start and while they are still scrunched up and flexible from the womb. They lose that true newborn look so quickly. To insure that I have time in my schedule for your session, it’s important to schedule your session while you are still pregnant. I’ll put your due date on my calendar and then have someone let me know as soon as baby is here so I can clear some time for your session after you come home. Then, when you’re home, give me a call and we’ll firm up a date and time. Wait..what?? You’ve already had your baby? Don’t stress. Just pick up the phone and call me and I’ll do everything I can to work you in.
Newborn sessions generally take place in your home. Your things are there and that’s where you can be comfortable. I’m open to other locations if absolutely necessary. If you are traveling from out of town, when you check into your room ask for a room with morning light. If you aren’t staying the night, I’ll work with you to find an appropriate location for our session but I highly recommend planning to stay. I’m also available for travel outside of the Grand Junction/western slope area.
I like to start your session in the morning. This gives us plenty of time to get baby comfy and snuggly for all those sleepy baby poses. Newborn sessions can last 3-5 hours, so I’ll be hanging out a bit. We’re on baby’s clock and nothing happens if baby’s not happy and sometimes we just have to wait it out. I’m patient. And with patients, milkies and some loven, together we can turn a fussy baby into a happy baby ready for portraits. The session will be relaxed and stress free with plenty of time for feedings, diaper changes and lots of snugly comfort.
Dress baby in easily removable clothing or have the baby swaddled in just a diaper. I’ll probably have baby naked most of the time so we need to do what we can to keep him/her warm. Plan to keep your home just a bit warmer than you usually would. Naked babies means that there’s no diaper to catch spills. Don’t stress about it. I’ve been peed and pooped on more times than you can imagine and I’ll bring a stack of absorbent cloth diapers to catch. If you are partial to a certain brand of wipes, please have them available.
While viewing my galleries, you might find poses or props that you are drawn to. If there’s a certain pose or prop or color theme that you’ve seen and you’d like to use, please say so in advance so I can be sure to bring it with me. I’ll bring baskets, wraps, head bands and a variety of furs and drops to use. Heck, you’ll see the pile of stuff and think I’m moving in. But, I’ll also look around your home a bit. I’ll poke through baby’s room and I’ll pull from your things making your portraits unique to you. Again, if you have something specific you’d like me to use, pull it out and I’ll use them if I can.
Siblings and other family members are welcome to join in on a few of the photographs but the focus of the session will be on baby.
